Your new role

The Payroll & Benefits Administrator ensures the accurate and timely processing of payroll. This role is integral to both the Accounting and HR teams, maintaining compliance with payroll legislation and company policies. The Payroll & Benefits Administrator also plays a critical role in supporting efficient processes, ensuring employee satisfaction, and safeguarding sensitive payroll data.

 

In this role, you will process weekly payroll for salaried and hourly employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legislative requirements. You will manage payroll deductions, including taxes, benefits, garnishments, and pensions. Reviewing and reconciling timecards, overtime, and attendance records, and resolving discrepancies where necessary will be part of your duties. You will maintain accurate and up-to-date employee payroll records, including new hires, terminations, and compensation changes.

 

Additionally, you will prepare and issue payroll reports, including ROEs, T4s, and year-end filings. Administering employee benefits, ensuring correct deductions and remittances, and coordinating with HR and Accounting teams to address payroll-related inquiries and resolve issues promptly are key responsibilities. You will ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll regulations, proactively implementing legislative updates. Supporting the implementation of ERP/payroll system enhancements and updates, identifying and recommending process improvements to optimize payroll operations, and adhering to all company policies and procedures are also essential aspects of the role. You may also perform any other duties that may be superficially or generally assigned.

 

Qualifications

To excel in this role, you will need a strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation and tax regulations. Proficiency in payroll systems, with experience in Vista by Viewpoint being an asset, is required. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and formulas, is essential. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills are crucial. You must be able to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism, and possess strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

You should have 6+ years of experience in payroll & benefits administration, preferably in construction, manufacturing, or a related industry. Post-secondary education in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is required. PCP (Payroll Compliance Practitioner) certification is preferred. Previous experience in a multi-divisional payroll environment and with union payroll processing is an asset.
