Desired Results of the Position:
Develop and lead a master strategic plan to unify the SA’s objectives, prioritizing student engagement and growth.Strengthen SA’s reputation through compelling storytelling and robust public relations frameworks that build community connection.Align communication and strategic planning with organizational priorities, using data insights to drive long-term growth and operational effectiveness.Cultivate engagement with students and the Algonquin College community while providing strategic support for crisis management and stakeholder relations.
Nature and Scope
The Senior Manager of Communications and Strategy plays a pivotal role in aligning strategic planning across all Students’ Association (SA) services, encompassing communication, programming, and the future direction of SA’s offerings. This role leads the development of a comprehensive, organization-wide strategic plan that integrates data-driven insights and fosters cohesive, impactful engagement. Working closely with the General Manager and Senior Management, this position supports the SA’s mission, builds strong stakeholder relationships, enhances crisis response, and broadens SA’s influence within the college and broader community.
Job Duties
Strategic Communication Leadership and Storytelling
Develop and implement a communication strategy that prioritizes SA’s storytelling efforts, aligning brand standards and key messaging frameworks with SA’s strategic goals.Lead the creation of content that tells SA’s story across all platforms, engaging students and stakeholders meaningfully.Advise the General Manager and Senior Management on high-impact communications, including public perception, crisis management, and media strategies.
Organizational Strategic Planning and Stakeholder Engagement
Analyze trends and develop initiatives that support SA’s long-term positioning and goals.Lead cross-departmental strategic planning, helping departments align their goals with SA’s mission and establish measurable outcomes.Build relationships with key stakeholders (students, college leadership, alumni, government and community partners) to foster community support for SA’s vision.
Public Relations, Media, and Crisis Management
Serve as the primary media liaison, building SA’s public profile through proactive media relations and compelling storytelling.Lead crisis communications, ensuring cohesive, transparent responses that maintain SA’s integrity and reputation.Provide media training and prepare key messages for Senior Management, fostering confidence in public-facing roles.Develop targeted communication strategies that promote SA’s services and leadership opportunities, supporting outreach and recruitment efforts.
Internal Communications and Policy Compliance
Promote an inclusive, well-informed workplace through storytelling-based internal communication channels that align with SA’s values.Facilitate internal workshops and training, equipping staff with skills in communication and strategic storytelling.Develop and oversee policies for communications and media relations, ensuring compliance with AODA and privacy legislation.General duties as assigned by the General Manager.

Desired Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Strategic Planning or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).Minimum five years of experience in a managerial role.Minimum ten years of experience in communications or strategic planning.Proven expertise in storytelling, strategic planning, and crisis communications.Strong familiarity with data analysis tools and digital communications platforms.Experience in the post-secondary sector or student-focused organizations is an asset.
Compensation:
Salary Range: – $85,000-$105,000The Algonquin Students’ Association offers a comprehensive benefits package to its employees.
