What is the opportunity?

We are looking for a Director, Software Development (Java) to anticipate technical challenges, assess business requirements, and lead a team in designing, building, and maintaining a mission-critical application. This role requires technical expertise in Java and AngularJS, combined with the ability to foster collaboration, coach team members, and direct the technical evolution of the platform.

As a technical leader, you will establish best practices aligned with RBC Standing Orders, Policies and Guidelines, determine architectural direction in collaboration with RBC Architectural Roadmap, and implement strategies that drive scalability, reliability, and long-term maintainability. You will work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to ensure alignment between technical solutions and business objectives.

What will you do?

Lead a team of developers, providing technical guidance and direction on project execution.Implement design patterns, clean code principles, and best practices to ensure maintainable software; coach team members by conducting code reviews, sharing knowledge, and promoting best practices; foster a collaborative and innovative engineering culture, encouraging continuous learningAnticipate scalability, performance, and security challenges before they become bottlenecks.Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the existing codebase, identifying opportunities for refactoring and modernization; determine the most effective tools, frameworks, and technologies for future developmentBuild high-quality, scalable software solutions in Java (Spring Boot) and AngularJS; direct efforts to maintain and improve the AngularJS front-end, ensuring a seamless user experience; determine a potential migration strategy from AngularJS to modern front-end frameworks; assess back-end performance and implement optimizations in Spring Boot, Hibernate, and SQL queriesDirect efforts to resolve technical blockers and ensure smooth project executionEstablish architectural guidelines and coding standards to maintain a high-quality codebaseDetermine the appropriate balance between short-term fixes and long-term strategic improvements; direct technical decision-making to align with business goals and system scalabilityImplement and optimize CI/CD pipelines to improve deployment efficiency; assess and recommend improvements in cloud deployment and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes); establish monitoring, logging, and performance tuning strategies for production stability

What do you need to succeed?

Must Have:

Strong experience in java, particularly with frameworks in spring and jpa/hibernate for data persistenceSolid understanding of Solace, REST APIs, microservices architecture and best practices for scalable java applicationsExperience in maintaining and enhancing AngularJS applications; familiarity with migrating or modernizing AngularJS codebases is a plus given AngularJS’s end-of-life statusProven experience leading a team of developers, conducting code reviews, and ensuring code qualityAbility to guide team members in technical decisions and foster a collaborative environmentStrong understanding of system design, design patterns and architectural best practices; experience in balancing technical debt with new feature developmentExperience with build tools like Maven, CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Jenkins) and deployment automation; familiarity with monitoring tools, logging frameworks and debugging complex issues in production environments

Nice To Have:

Domain experience: Capital Markets > Equity Derivatives > Structured ProductsAngular/React/Vue.js experience for potential frontend modernizationExperience in migrating legacy codebases (especially from AngularJS to newer framework)Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP) for scalable deploymentKnowledge of database performance tuning and SQL optimizationStrong grasp of test automation framework for both unit and integration testing
